Why subscribe to The Nature-Nurture-Nietzsche Newsletter?

The Nature-Nurture-Nietzsche Newsletter was created by author and professor of psychology Steve Stewart-Williams (me!).

The newsletter stems from my love of science and knowledge, and my belief that, if we want to make the world a better place, we need to strive for an accurate view of the world. It has two main aims:

  1. To help spread important ideas and knowledge.

  2. To carve out a space for free thought and non-politicized science.

The N3 Newsletter features brief updates and longer posts on psychology, evolution, science, and philosophy - including topics that some writers and academics shy away from, such as evolutionary psychology, sex differences, gender issues, nature-nurture issues, and threats to freedom of speech.

What You Get with a Free Subscription

What You Get with a Paid Subscription - in other words, for about the price of a coffee each month

In addition, paid subscribers will have access to various features I’m planning to roll out over the next year or so as I further develop the website. These include:

  • Multi-part summaries and reviews of some of the greatest non-fiction books ever written

  • Multi-part features on major topics in psychology and philosophy, some based on university lectures I’ve written and delivered over the years

  • Unpublished sections of my earlier books and early access to sections of the book that I’m currently writing

Finally, you’ll be making it possible for me to take risks with the content I offer in the newsletter. I love being a psych prof, but I’m aware that some of the topics I write about - from the evolution of sex differences to the nature of intelligence to the excesses of wokeness - could potentially land me in hot water. Having the option to go full-time on Substack gives me the freedom and financial security to speak openly and honestly on any topic, without having to worry that I might be cancelled. So, by taking out a paid subscription, you’ll be helping support open and honest science writing.

Thank you!

Two Decades in the Making

I’ve been teaching, writing about, and doing research on the topics covered in The N3 Newsletter for more than two decades.

My academic work revolves around the idea that theories from evolutionary biology can shed light on the human mind and behavior, with a special focus on sex differences and altruism. I’ve also written about the philosophical implications of evolutionary theory, cultural evolution, and the placebo effect.

My books are The Ape That Understood the Universe (2018) and Darwin, God and the Meaning of Life (2010). Book number three - A Billion Years of Sex Differences - will hit the shelves in 2026…

Praise for Steve/The Nature-Nurture-Nietzsche Newsletter

John Barry (psychologist and co-founder of the Male Psychology Network):

The acclaim that Steve Stewart-Williams enjoys is well-deserved. He manages to write accurately and intelligently about sensitive topics that are often written about clumsily by others. The result is that many more people are open to learning from him, which is surely the aim of every educationalist. [Source.]

Todd Shackelford (Oakland University):

Stewart-Williams is an exceptionally good writer, a witty and learned guide through challenging but exciting terrain that includes psychology, biology, anthropology, philosophy, and animal behavior. [Source.]

Lance Workman (Bath Spa University):

Stewart-Williams is not only an experienced evolutionary psychologist but also a talented and insightful writer with a memorable turn of phrase. [Source.]

Jerry Coyne (University of Chicago):

Steve Stewart-Williams now has a Substack site… he’s a good guy and it’s worth looking at (subscribe if you want to read it regularly). [Source.]

Todd Kashdan (George Mason University; the Provoked Newsletter):

I’ve been following Steve on social media for years. He takes bold stances and offers rich descriptions of research. Subscribe and improve your thinking about the human condition. [Source.]

Graham Collins (aka World Famous British Sex Expert Dr. Nigel Cummerbund):

As a standup comedian who mostly talks about sex and relationships, I'm always looking for new and unique insights to human behaviour. The content from Steve Stewart-Williams is very useful in providing ways of looking at issues from interesting angles or confirming my thoughts while jump starting my brain as I try to write my comedy monologues that attempt to educate while entertaining.

James Nuzzo (The Nuzzo Letter)

Steve Stewart-Williams of The Nature-Nurture-Nietzsche Newsletter is a data machine. I can’t think of a single person who matches his breadth and consistency in presenting scientific results about human cognitive biases and sex differences in psychology. In the time it took you to read this review, he already published another graph.

Rob Brooks (University of New South Wales; the Natural History of the Future Newsletter):

I subscribe because Steve is perhaps the best writer on evolution and human behaviour today, certainly the best on Substack. When I want to learn, or when I want to write, he is often the first person whose articles I read.
